Move-In Day Tips

How to Have a Successful Move-In Day

What an exciting day, HomeHunters! It is finally time to move into your new home! Don't stress. Move-in day can cause panic among new homebuyers but we created some helpful tips to make the day go as smoothly as possible.

If you are feeling overwhelmed by move-in day, it is helpful to break the process down into smaller tasks to prepare for the move. Planning in advance will reduce your stress and make the actual day go more efficiently.

Create a Move-In Day Schedule

Do not wait until the last minute to start packing and getting yourself ready for the move. Avoid putting things off and creating more stress for yourself. Plan out how much time you have and create a room-packing schedule to keep yourself on track. Start to plan and prepare at least one month before moving day. Create a moving checklist to keep yourself organized.

Only Pack What You Need

Go through your closets and storage areas and see what you can donate or trash. Get rid of items that you never use or try and sell on marketplace sites. A purge of unwanted and unused items will help lighten your moving load and help you save time on packing things you are not going to be using in the future.

Pack a Box of First Night Necessities

Pack one moving box of all the things you will need during your first night in your new home. This box may include personal items, toiletries, a toothbrush, bed sheets, blankets, prescriptions, eyeglasses, chargers, and anything else you need to survive your first night.

Label Your Boxes

Unloading boxes can be challenging if they are not labeled correctly. Label every box and make sure they are all assigned to a specific room to avoid congestion in one area. Use a color code system to avoid having to write out each room on all of your boxes. This will help your movers put each box in the correct room and make sure there is no confusion.

Move-In Day TipsKnow What's in the Boxes

It is helpful to write down a brief summary of what is inside each box, so you are not rummaging through boxes to find a specific item.

Don't Make Boxes Too Heavy

This is a very common mistake among new homeowners. Whether you are doing all of the moving on your own or if you have hired movers, save their back and yours by limiting the number of items you put in each box. But, make sure that there is not too much open space in your boxes for items to move around and become damaged. Pack full but light. Use towels and blankets to protect items and fill up unused space.

Change Your Address

Fill out a change of address form at your local U.S. Postal service so that they know where to forward your mail and inform senders of your new address. Update financial services and subscriptions to ensure that you receive important mail from them at your new address.

Transfer Your Services

Make a list of the services you receive at your current address and call to cancel them and reactivate them at your new home. This may include internet, satellite or cable, electricity, and trash collection. Call these services at least a week or two before you are planning to move.

Pick a Strategic Moving Date

Moving at the end of the month and on weekends can be increasingly more expensive than picking a middle-of-the-month weekday.

Create a Moving Day Supply Kit

Prepare a supply kit to help you get through move-in day. Gather these items in a bag for when you need them during the move-in process.

  • Box Cutters
  • Scissors
  • Garbage Bags
  • Rubber Bands
  • Cleaning Spray
  • Paper Towels

Take Your Time

Do not rush the move-in process. Unpack thoughtfully and slowly to figure out where everything should go. Take your time and ensure that everything is where you want it in your new home.
